Challenges
Pixel based animation VS. Competitor’s vector based animation.
Our competitor’s vector based animation was relatively easy to make but it didn’t capture the spirit of Wu Daozi’s drawing style. Because vector-based lines are smooth with the same thickness, it loses the artistic variation like the natural strokes in the calligraphy.
Our solution is pixel based animation. In order to keep the original style of the artist’s drawing strokes, my team used Chinese ink and paper to re-draw most of the figures. Combined with the hi-resolution scan, we successfully created the fluent animation with Wu’s drawing style and rhythm of lines.
Press for the Opening Ceremony
As the part of the Xuchang government's cultural revitalization initiatives, the project was launched along with the grand opening of the museum. The local government issued a new set of stamps to commemorate the great master piece of art work. Chinese major press media reported the events. The project was rated as the most artistically stunning animation after the 2008 World Expo’s Along the River During the Qingming Festival animation.
