The Merchant Knowledge Framework
In 2024, I joined Google’s Merchant UX team to lead the design vision for Merchant Knowledge and Emerging Signal products. I architected a unified framework for a suite of initiatives—including Trending, Similar Brands, Distinctive Attributes, and New Arrivals—defining how Google interprets and surfaces merchant identity.
This work required transforming complex temporal signals and brand relationship data into actionable insights. By designing the logic for how brands "cluster" based on consumer perception, I helped move Google Shopping from a search engine to an Intelligence Engine. All proposals were approved and transitioned into active development, establishing the core components for the next generation of Google’s merchant experience.
Initiative 1: Brand Similarity & Relationship Mapping
In this project, I designed a brand similarity model that synthesizes shopping signals and merchant knowledge to map the complex relationships between global brands.
Strategic Move: I architected a model that uncovers how brands "cluster" based on consumer perception and shared characteristics.
Outcome: This foundational work enables high-fidelity recommendations and provides merchants with deep competitive insights, moving Google Shopping from a search engine to an Intelligence Engine. (Dec 2024)
Initiative 2: New Arrivals & "Freshness" Logic
New Arrivals delivers a strategic framework that surfaces newly released products and freshness-based annotations at critical points in the shopping journey.
Strategic Move: I designed a dynamic system that treats "freshness" as a first-class signal, ensuring brand profiles remain evolving and relevant rather than static.
Outcome: Strengthens user engagement by reducing cognitive load for shoppers seeking the latest trends and enriches the merchant's ability to showcase innovation. (Feb 2025)
Initiative 3: Emerging Content & Temporal Intelligence
Time-based product intelligence is foundational to building high-intent shopping journeys.
Strategic Move: With Emerging Content, I developed a framework that interprets temporal signals to align product discovery with real-world contexts and seasonal moments.
